Houston Project: Youth Mission Trip 2010

What is Houston Project?

The Houston Project is an eight-day entry-level missional training project in which hundreds of students experience missional instruction and field training in one of the world's most diverse cities, Houston, Texas. Students serve in declining churches, apartment complexes, and local parks through Vacation Bible Schools, various evangelistic venues, service projects, and homeless ministry as they seek to bring the gospel of Christ to the 'least of these.'

Why Houston, TX?

  • Houston has a population of 5.5 million
  • Houston is America's 4th Largest City
  • Houston is the 7th Most Diverse city in the world
  • Houston has 300 people groups from 139 nationalities

Mission

We desire to provide students with more than just opportunities to serve the people of Houston. Our hope is that students would also receive on the field training that would aid them as they learn what it means to live a missional life. We long to see our city and the lives of your students transformed by the gospel of Christ and the beauty of God.

Vision & Purpose

The opportunities mentioned exist to field train future leaders in an urban setting utilizing the local church where biblical knowledge, Christ-like character and ministry skills are developed in a missional environment. Our desire is to facilitate projects that give student ministers the freedom to adapt to the needs and ministry goals of their respective group.

History

Inner-city mission projects in Houston began with a vision to field train the next generation in evangelism and discipleship through missions. In July of 1992, 20 students embarked on a missionary journey to inner-city Houston, TX to be the first to participate in this field-training endeavor. Over the past 15 years, the Lord has continued to expand and develop these projects. Currently, hundreds of students participate in the Houston Project each July, and hundreds more participate at various times throughout the year through the venues of Vacation Bible Schools, Kids Clubs, Youth Rallies, Sports Camps, Prayer Walking, Street Evangelism, Homeless Ministry, Personal Discipleship, and more.

COST

$175 per person includes:

  • Meals
  • Lodging
  • Training
  • Portion of the ministry costs

Housing and Activities

We will be staying in the gymnasium of Houston's First Baptist Church (boys and girls will be separated by partitions). During the morning and afternoon, we will work with declining churches that HFBC partners with and do VBS activities, hand out snow cones, play with the kids, evangelize, etc. At night, they will have the opportunity to here from a speaker (probably regarding missions), listen to an awesome band, and interact with students from across the nation. Leisure activities include a free day (LLBC students will visit Galveston, TX for the beach), a full gymnasium, bowling (AT THE CHURCH!), billiards, ping-pong, and foosball.
